Recently, the International Conference on Quantum Communication, Measurement and Computing (QCMC) announced the awarding of the International Quantum Awards 2024 to Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) academician and Tsinghua University Institute of Interdisciplinary Information Sciences professor Duan Luming, in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the field of quantum communication and quantum computing, particularly for the proposal of the DLCZ (Duan-Lukin-Cirac-Zoller) quantum repeater scheme for long-distance quantum communication, the Duan-Kimble scheme for scalable optical quantum computing, and his recent work on building one of the largest trapped-ion quantum simulators using 300 ions. The award was officially presented this year at the 16th International Conference on Quantum Communication, Measurement and Computing (QCMC). The QCMC, held every two years, is a high-level large-scale academic event in the field of quantum information science research.

Established in 1996 by the QCMC, the International Quantum Awards is awarded biennially to scientists who have made outstanding contributions to the field of quantum communication, quantum measurement and quantum computing research. Previous recipients of the award include three Nobel laureates (David Wineland, Serge Haroche, Anton Zeilinger), four recipients of the Wolf Prize in Physics (Ignacio Cirac, Peter Zoller, Anton Zeilinger, Charles Bennett) and three recipients of the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics (Charles Bennett, Peter Shor, David Deutsch). Duan is the second Chinese physicist to receive this honor following CAS academician Pan Jianwei.
