Hundreds of Tsinghua University alumni who did their post-doctoral research here returned to the campus to celebrate the 91st anniversary on Saturday.
In 1985, Tsinghua became the first school in China to offer post-doctoral studies.
Tsung-Dao Lee was invited to write an inscription in honor of the Tsinghua postdocs which read: "Clear lakes moistening the campus, resplendent blooming trees. Young scholars should select the essence of science, and make progress steadily."
In the 1980's, Dr. Tsung-Dao Lee, an alumnus of Tsinghua and the 1957 winner of the Nobel Prize in physics made a suggestion to the late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping that, China should initiate the system of post-doctoral studies.
The university now enrolls more than 1,390 post-doctoral students, the most of any university in the country and the number is expected to reach 1,500 in 2005. These researchers have contributed enormously to the country's modern development drive, said Wang Dazhong, president of Tsinghua.
