“China-UK Seminar on Carbon Footprint and Resource Supply Risks of Power Batteries” Successfully Held

On August 27, the "China-UK Seminar on Carbon Footprint and Resource Supply Risks of Power Batteries" was successfully held. This event was supported by the 2024 Tsinghua-Cambridge Joint Research Fund and co-hosted by the Institute for Carbon Neutrality and the School of Environment, Tsinghua University, the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, and the Department of Engineering, University of Sheffield, organized by the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Ecology and Environment at the School of Environment, Tsinghua University.

Over 30 experts and scholars from academia, tech companies, and research institutes gathered to discuss challenges and opportunities of the sustainable development in the power battery industry against the backdrop of international green trade barriers. The seminar was chaired by Xu Ming, Associate Dean of the School of Environment and Chair Professor of Carbon Neutrality, Tsinghua University. Lu Xi, Assistant Director of Institute for Carbon Neutrality, Professor at the School of Environment, Tsinghua University, delivered opening remarks on behalf of the Institute.

Experts including Professor Xu Ming from the School of Environment, Tsinghua University, Professor Jonathan Cullen from the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, Guest Researcher Zheng Ying from the Automotive Electrification Research Center, China Society of Automotive Engineers, Senior Manager Liu Chengxi from ESG Management Department, Sunwoda Electronic Co., Ltd., Director Song Yi of the Comprehensive Business Department and Battery Passport, China Battery Industry Association, and Deputy Director Shi Hong of the Green and Low-Carbon Department, China Automotive Strategy and Policy Center presented special reports on relevant topics.

Roundtable Discussion

Representatives from companies including Shanghai NIO Automobile Service Co. Ltd., Xiaomi Automotive Technology Co., Ltd., BYD Co., Ltd., Guangdong Guanghua Sci-Tech Co., Ltd., the Rocky Mountain Institute, Panasonic Corporation of China, Beijing WELION New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., and the Energy Foundation China participated in the roundtable discussion.

The experts reached a consensus on key issues such as carbon footprint databases, raw material supply risks, and direct supply of green electricity, building an important platform for cooperation between China and the UK in power battery field and providing valuable insights for promoting the sustainable development of the power battery industry.
